Values as heuristics: a contextual empiricist account of assessing values scientifically

چکیده
Abstract Feminist philosophers have discussed the prospects for assessing values empirically, particularly given ongoing threat of sexism and other oppressive influencing science society. Some advocates such tests now champion a “values as evidence” approach, they criticize Helen Longino’s contextual empiricism not holding to same level empirical scrutiny claims. In this paper, we defend by arguing that many these criticisms are based on mischaracterizations position, overstatements certain claims, false dichotomies. Her only allows support disconfirmation values, but Longino explicitly discusses when can be empirically adjudicated emphasizes crucial role community standards evidence. We elaborate less direct account heuristics” reviewing theory evidence then using case study from Elisabeth Lloyd biology female orgasm, demonstrating androcentric in evolutionary science. Within Lloyd’s empiricism, do get treated directly assessed individuals, rather heuristic tools build models whose use validated or invalidated communities their fruitfulness logic pragmatics research questions specific historical cultural contexts.

Contextual values of observables in quantum measurements.
We introduce contextual values as a generalization of the eigenvalues of an observable that takes into account both the system observable and a general measurement procedure. This technique leads to a natural definition of a general conditioned average that converges uniquely to the quantum weak value in the minimal disturbance limit. As such, we address the controversy in the literature regard...
متن کاملHypersets as truth values
The hypersets are shown to play the truth values of stable properties of nondeterministc dynamical systems. In fact, the universe of hereditory nite hypersets, with the truth value as an atom added, is shown to be the subobject classi er of the category of simulations of nondeterministic dynamical systems.

Three studies tested whether individualism–collectivism moderates the extent to which values are endorsed as ideal self-guides and ought self-guides, and the consequences for regulatory focus and emotion. Across Studies 1 and 2, individualists endorsed values that are relatively central to the self as stronger ideals than oughts, whereas collectivists endorsed them as ideals and oughts to a sim...
متن کاملAssessing Students’ Moral Reasoning of a Values-Based Education
Students’ moral reasoning was assessed at a religiously affiliated liberal arts university. Cohort data were collected from undergraduate students who had entered the university as freshmen: 364 students in 2007 and 264 students in 2009. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in students’ post-conventional moral reasoning scores between freshmen and seniors and a significan...
